I was over at MLB.com yesterday getting excited about the upcoming baseball season and found myself reading about Rockies pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim. Apparently Kim is getting a raw deal out in Colorado and wants out. Throughout spring training he’s been trying an array of new pitches at the request of the Rockies and as such, his game is sliding and his starting role may be in jeopardy. He’s had a poor spring spending most of his time working on a two-seam fastball inside to right-handed batters and his changeup, and as a result may end up in the bullpen. This is no big deal but what I found to be particularly interesting was that the actual article I read, instead of paraphrasing, they put the Korean pitcher’s response on the web, quoting his broken English verbatim:

“It seems to me this spring is a little bit weird,” said Kim, who as planned was not part of the contingent at Tempe for the Cactus League game against the Angels. “They say, ‘Try this.’ ‘Try changeup, inside two-seamers.’ Then, ‘You’re OK. If you give up hits, home runs, they don’t count.’ Then now …

“It’s not right, I think. If they say, ‘Competition, do this,’ I don’t do any ‘try.’ It’s not right. Hopefully, I’ve talked to my agent, and I’ll see. They’re trying to [trade Kim] and they’re going to find something. I don’t know. Hopefully.”

I read this a few times over before getting the gist of it but still I don’t understand why they couldn’t have just paraphrased poor Kim or left it at “It’s not right” or one of his more intelligible statements. Kudos to Kim though for speaking the English and not taking any crap from Colorado. I hope he ends up pitching somewhere, preferably not for my Phillies though since he’s awful.

It’ll be an email interview so I’ll just be sending out the questions and then waiting to see what he has to say and hopefully they will be some good responses like with my main man Dennis Hayden (that interview is still probably my favorite item up on this entire site).
