I still recall when I first gained the knowledge that Ray Parker was not only a thief for stealing a beat from Huey Lewis for his classic Ghostbusters theme, but also a racist. Towards the end of the song, there is the subtle line, “I hate Mexicans,” or at least that’s how I initially interpreted it. Everyone else says it is “I hear it likes the girls,” but to this day I think my original suspicion was right, though the more I listen to it the more I have to talk myself into believing it.
OK, so maybe that’s a stretch. OK, well maybe I’m just plain wrong. But subliminal messages in songs are present, and also in movies. Disney has been the subject of a good deal of nitpicking which has led to some people finding some subtle sexual or unsuitable references in their movies or products. Some of these are very convincing. With the help of snopes.com, I’ll present some of the most infamous.
Film: The Lion King
Subtlety: “SEX” in the clouds (click for picture)
My Diagnosis: It definitely appears that there is some sort of text in the sky. Whether or not it says “SEX” is up for grabs. Counter-rumors say that special effects guys made it say “SFX," which could be true. Then again these same guys are probably also perverts. This one I’m not too sure of, but I’d say it’s one of the above. Either way, big deal. Since when did "sex" become a curse word? Some mother or parent’s rights group probably sued over this.
Verdict: Still in the air.
Film: The Lion King
Subtlety: Rafiki chants squashed bananas up your arse in Lion King Talking Book (click for audio)
My Diagnosis: I think I may have actually had this book. I can definitely see where they are coming from with this accusation. It does sound like he is saying "squashed bananas up your arse," though it doesn’t make too much sense.
Verdict: This is a false allegation. What he’s really saying is "Asante sana squashed banana." "Asante sana" being Swahili for "Thank you very much."
Film: The Rescuers
Subtlety: Images of a topless woman appear at one point in the movie on the wall behind the two mice (pic 1 pic 2 )
My Diagnosis: Speaks for itself.
Verdict: Disney has confirmed this. The two frames have been in the movie since its original release in 1977. They recalled millions of copies of this video, though the two frames are only visible if you look for them and still frame it. May never have been noticed had Disney not made a public announcement concerning it.
Film: The Little Mermaid
Subtlety: A phallus appears on the cover of the video.
My Diagnosis: There’s no doubt that this spire of the castle looks like a schlong. Even Disney himself could probably see this through his cryogenic capsule. Whether or not it was deliberately inserted there is still debatable, however someone should have "pulled out" on the release of the box.
Verdict: Apparently false. The artist who drew this claims he was totally unaware of it and was facing a deadline when he completed the background art for the promotional poster and eventual movie cover. So he says at least…
Film: The Little Mermaid
Subtlety: Minister pops a boner at the wedding
My Diagnosis: This is a little bit of a stretch. On this one you have to wonder what perverts are eyeing up this stuff. Oh yeah, it must be conservative Christian organizations like Life League, who started the boycott and rumor and eventually led to a woman suing.
Verdict: This is the knee of the minister. This rumor is false
Film: Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Subtlety: You can see Jessica Rabbit naked. (Click to see still frames)
My Diagnosis: Works for me.
Verdict: This one is still unconfirmed one way or another. For those playing at home check out your Who Framed Roger Rabbit Laserdisc to side 4 frames 2170-2172. That’s the only way you’ll see it.
Film: Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Subtlety: Donald Duck delivers a racial slur to Daffy Duck during their piano duel (Listen here). Alleged dialog:
Daffy: "I’ve worked with a lot of wise-quackers, but you are dethpsicable!"
Donald: "God damn stupid n*gger! I’m gonna WAAAAAAAAGH!!!"
Daffy: "This is the last time I work with someone with a speech impediment!"
My Diagnosis: Hate to admit it, but pretty hard to not hear this one. Might be some of Donald’s classic rambling gone awry but I do indeed hear what they hear.
Verdict: No official word on this case. You decide.
There you have it, some of Disney’s biggest alleged sexual/racial insertions brought to you along with the cold hard facts. Was Walt Disney a Nazi sympathizer and racist? Who knows. Is he frozen or is that a myth? Who knows. Are Disney employees sadistically inserting perverted elements into the children cartoons? Again, who knows.
What we do know, is that Greg Root has every single Disney episode taped, including a bootleg copy of Song of the South he spent $80 on. He also has a vast collection of cartoons taped from the Disney Channel on the same VHS tapes as his hardcore porno.

Exhibit A- First we have little Jenny adopting a homeless kitten who she takes home and takes care of while somewhat pushing the other pet - georgette, a spoiled poodle, aside. Jenny = the government. Georgette = the rich upper class. Oliver = the have-nots. Message: the government should pity the poor and damn the rich
Exhibit b- A homeless man is being bullied for money by a powerful mobster, portraying that powerful rich people are sadistic criminals who stomp all over those who are down and out.
Exhibit c- The mobster is killed by the homeless man and his gang of stray dogs at the end. Homeless people are considered the lowest echelons of humanity, and dogs are considered second to people. Message: The underclass must rise up and kill the rich and powerful
Exhibit D- One of the characters (francis) is a (psuedo)-intellectual. Generally commonplace amongst communists. Another character (tito) is clearly a stoner/hippie. Hippies tend to be into communism
Exhibit E- Jenny gets a bunch of junk for her birthday and still has a good time. Message: Materialism doesn’t matter.

I think they’re pretty funny. And I was watching An urban legends show or something and they proved most of these to be true. I guess Walt Disney wanted the parents to have something to laugh at when they took their kids to see the movie. The SEX/SFX thing in Lion King - since when did the letter F have a third serif that makes it look horribly like the letter E? This says SEX. End of story.
Naked woman in The Rescuers - well hot-diggity-damn. I’ve seen enough women naked to know what one looks like, and this is genuine, even if it IS only a two-frame thing.
Minister’s woody - this one’s questionable. I try not to make a habit out of looking at other guys’ tools, thanks. It could happen, though. Doesn’t look like a knee to me, anyway.
Penis-spire - okay. How can this NOT have been noticed? The detail in comparison to a real penis is too… detailed I guess, for the artist to say “Oh, well I guess I didn’t notice, I was being pressured with a deadline…” Bah. I know I said I don’t make a habit out of looking at tally-whackers, but I DO know what they look like.
Rafiki’s arse-bananas - I don’t think this one’s geniune. Kinda sounds like it, but we all know how two different things can sound similar.

Now to everyone who’s saying they’ll stop their kids from watching Disney - why? I never noticed this crap before. YOU never noticed this crap either. And our young children who have no idea of what sex even IS will have no trouble missing these things either. I don’t understand why no one cares that Disney puts in subliminal messages. The whole way they portray women as weak and submissive and should be sexy and seductive to get what they want. It promotes abusive relationships (beauty and the beast) and puts random pervert scenes, which if you know anything about science, and psychology you do pick up these messages whether you have realised it or not. Children are raised on these films, and as Disney has said, there only objective is to make money. Yet people defend Disney and say this is ok? Yeah it is funny, but its also harming people. There films are really racist, (think about it) and those stereotypes become engrained into your mind, you wont even realise that those stereotypes are wrong. I just think disney should take some responsibility.

You know…instead of looking so closely at Disney’s 2 frame “subliminal messages” you should look at what real messages kids actually get out of these films. It is more damaging to think that in life there is always a happy ending…always a prince charming…Life doesn’t always turn out all great and dandy like in all of these Disney movies
I think the argument that it’s all imagined is pretty naive. There’s absolutely no way that’s the priest’s knee in the little mermaid. In fact, if you watch you can see it slowly pop out and then go away. You can clearly see it. Plus, it’s been edited in the newer release of the movie and has been taken out. So whether or not it’s his “knee” disney obviously felt it was necessary to remove it. And of course the artist denies that it’s a boner! Who’s going to admit to that?
Even though it’s clear that there are some sexual inuendos in these movies, you can find those in almost any kid show… producers include “adult humor” in a lot of kid shows that kids will never pick up on, but adults find entertaining. Remember when Tinky Winky was gay??
